Everybody can get a little clingy sometimes. It’s a natural part of being in love or feeling close to friends and family. If you’re doing things right in your relationships—like finding people who provide you with plenty of support, make you laugh, and are there for you—then you’re bound to cling to them from time to time. But ideally, you enjoy the company, love, and support of others but you don’t need it. Why? Because those people won’t be available to you all of the time! And you don’t want to have a total meltdown when that happens. You also don’t want to put too much pressure on the people with whom you have relationships, making them feel like they have no choice but to always be there for you for the relationship to survive—that’s a rather unfair expectation. So here is how to act and truly be less clingy in relationships.

Take yourself on dates

You can do this weekly, monthly, or whatever you’re comfortable with. Take yourself to a bar for a cocktail, to a restaurant for dinner or to a movie. When you see that nothing goes wrong—that you can enjoy a meal at a restaurant all by yourself—you’ll feel less panicked when you can’t find someone to hang with on the weekends.
